German Village consists of 233 acres and is a preeminent historic district. Schiller Park was originally known as Stewart’s Grove and today is the home of Oktoberfest, family reunions, and Sanger fests.
You will have to go to Schiller Park in person to see the statue of The umbrella girl.
I stopped by the Meeting Haus and had a chat with Norm Burns a retired dentist and Ohio State University alumni. Norm suggested I watch the following video narrated by Andrea Cambern. Norm enrolled at OSU the same year Woody Hayes became football coach at OSU.
From there I was off to the book loft and a unique bookstore it is.
One could easily spend many hours just at the bookstore but as usual I’m getting hungry so a short trip thru the neighborhood and
Love the village architecture wrought iron fences and extensive use of brick are hallmarks of the area. It’s time to eat..
A stop at Max and Erma’s 739 S. Third St. or if you are not all that hungry and just need some caffeine.
Then I discovered the old school house that is now home for “craft’s for sale” made by senior citizens.
That’s Velma sitting at the desk. She let me know there were crafts upstairs, downstairs,on the stairs,in the principals office and in the coat room. ( I’m here to tell you the prices are “right”)
This very unique place is run under the auspices of The Columbus Dept. of Recreation. ( Let’s give them a big thanks)
I’ll bet you can’t tell what I went home with? Just a little present for my wife Linda.
Well German Village is a great place to visit and I certainly didn’t have enough time to spend exploring everything. So I will be going back. One place Norm suggested checking out both inside and out is:
Norm said they have some magnificent frescos inside.

Hmmm, there's a Germantown, Maryland but I don't know if it's as interesting as this one looks in Ohio!
ReplyDeleteJoe: Very cool look at Columbus and what it has to offer to your world. I was golfing today in the PA hills also.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tour. That is one lovely place. I enjoyed all of these images.
ReplyDeleteI was just in Columbus last week, and didn't have a chance to get to German Village. You aren't the only one who has to plan another trip to see the rest of the sights.
