FYI::: A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to "honor" thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?"
Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, "Thou shall not kill."

The Cades Cove Methodist Church was organized in the 1820s. The Methodist congregation, like that of the Missionary Baptists, was small.

    I've always loved this little church. Took photos of it probably 30 years ago, and I recall one monument in the cemetery that simply said "Mother."

    Oh the humor to be found on church marquees and in bulletins! I've driven through Cades Cove but wasn't looking for churches at the time. Your first photo is just so descriptive for this area--the simple white church in among the trees from a distance. My grandparents and parents were Primitive Baptists from the Appalachains. I went with the Methodists as an adult. A little more live and let live. :-)
