“Holiday Mail For Heroes is back for a fourth year! The American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes will collect holiday cards from regular citizens all across the country and distribute them to service members, veterans, and their families. Many active service members must spend the holidays apart from their family. Give back this holiday season by sending a card to thank those who have given a great deal to their country.

Send cards to the address below, and please read the guidelines carefully!

All cards must be postmarked no later than Friday, December 10th. Cards postmarked after this date will unfortunately be returned to the sender. This deadline ensures enough time to sort and distribute cards before the holidays.

After the mailbox closes, the cards we received will be screened for hazardous materials by Pitney Bowes and then reviewed by Red Cross volunteers working around the country.”

A Scary Wednesday Night 12/01/2010

ACCIDENT NEAR LANCASTER,OHIO

WELL IT’S WINTER IN OHIO AND ROAD CONDITIONS CAN CHANGE FROM SECOND TO SECOND AS LINDA FOUND OUT WEDNESDAY NIGHT. MOST IMPORTANTLY LINDA IS FINE OTHER THAN SOME PAINFUL BRUISES AND A STIFF NECK.

THE CAR::::

THE CULPRIT:: Black ice (or glare ice) is commonly a thin, unexpected and nearly invisible coating of ice on a roadway or walkway surface. Material beneath the thin ice is clearly visible. Minute precipitation amounts are adequate to create slippery, unnoticed and dangerous situations, where travelers have minimal indication of weather changes.

THE ACCIDENT SCENE THE NEXT DAY:

THE CAR HIT THE DITCH THEN FLIPPED END OVER END LANDING ON IT’S TOP. SEAT BELT, AIR BAGS AND LINDA’S GUARDIAN ANGEL KEPT THIS FROM BEING A TRAGEDY. A SPECIAL THANKS TO THE SHERRIFS DEPT.,THE OHIO HIGHWAY PATROL.,AND GOOD SAMARITANS AT THE SCENE. SO, PLEASE EVERYONE BE CAREFUL OUT THERE…

  SLOW DOWN AND WEAR THOSE SEAT BELTS.

IN THE TIME OF SEGREGATION::THE MONTPELIER TRAIN DEPOT EXHIBIT

Today marks the 55th anniversary of the civil disobedience on December 1, 1955 when the seamstress in Montgomery, Alabama, became a pivotal symbol in America's civil rights movement.” READ MORE. So for today a visit to the  Montpelier train station, which sits on the grounds of James Madison's Montpelier estate. The train station is now a small museum that depicts the era of segregation. There is a ROSA PARKS MUSEUM on the campus of Troy University Montgomery campus CLICK

It wasn't until the 1964 Civil Rights Act that all public accommodations nationwide were desegregated. 1964 was the year I graduated from high school. Today I find it hard to imagine.

There is an  International Civil Rights Center and Museum that uses the former F.W. Woolworth store in downtown Greensboro to remind people what segregation was like and how change was wrought in the way African-Americans were treated every day of their lives. READ MORE

Remembering the Old One Room School House This Holiday Season

HOLIDAYS NEAR LANCASTER,OHIO

For me, the holidays are a time for remembering days gone by; good times,places and family. Today’s post goes back to a time of the one room school house. I wonder how many years have passed since the school room rang with the laughter of children getting ready for their holidays?

I was on my way “somewhere else” when I saw this lonely building in the woods. I’m glad I stopped and took a few photos. Having the photos I needed a poem and I found this wonderful poem.. Aren’t the Holidays all about LOVE anyway?

Motts Military Museum & America’s Military Heritage

LANCASTER,OHIO,MOTTS MILITARY MUSEUM,THAT’S MY WORLD POST

 “Preserving America’s Military Heritage From Colonial Era to Iraqi Freedom”

I’ve travelled Rt. 33 from Lancaster,Ohio to Columbus,Ohio hundreds of times and I have often seen the sign for Motts Military Museum. For years I’ve said someday I’ll stop in. Well little did I know what I had been missing. If you are ever anywhere close to Columbus,Ohio and have any interest in our military heritage Motts is a must see.

We are just outside the front door so let’s head on inside. First, I would like to offer a special thanks to Mr. Warren Motts for taking his time to speak with me and allowing me to take photos inside the museum.

  The Colonial Era. See previous post on Fort Meigs.. Motts has a fine display of flint arrowheads and implements used during the colonial era.

Mr. Warren Motts is the director and founder of Motts Military Museum 1988 to present, in Groveport, Ohio and was a Professional photographer for 40 years .He is on the advisory board for THE CENTER FOR CIVIL WAR PHOTOGRAPY ( CHECK OUT THIS LINK )

If you want to take a hike at the Gettysburg Battlefield (Big Round Top) CLICK . Mr. Motts has an Honorary Lifetime Membership in the Association of Licensed Battlefield Guides Gettysburg, Pa.

Moving on to World War 1 & World War 11

 

On November 1, 2007 Brig. Gen. Paul W. Tibbets Jr., the commander and pilot of the Enola Gay, the B-29 Superfortress that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in the final days of World War II, died  at his home in Columbus, Ohio. He was 92. Paul Tibbets and the Enola Gay LINK . An interview of Paul Tibbets can be seen in the 1982 movie Atomic Cafe. He was also interviewed in the 1970s British documentary series The World at War.

A new wing is being added to the museum and is about two thirds done. The museum does not receive  outside funding for it’s operation. Funding is dependent on members dues and supporters donations. Take a second to go to The Motts Military Museum website to learn more.

Looking at the sky from Dawes Arboretum

SKYWATCH FRIDAY,ONE TANK TRIP FROM LANCASTER,OHIO,DAWES ARBORETUM,NATIONAL ROAD

Well,we have had some of the best autumn weather I can remember here in Ohio. Soon enough it’s all going to be either grey or gray. For today’s SKYWATCH FRIDAY a trip back to Dawes Arboretum.

Welcome to The Dawes Arboretum

The Arboretum now covers nearly 1,800 acres and includes eight miles of hiking trails and a four-mile Auto Tour.

But soon we will have:
